Côte d'Ivoire

A country in West Africa, formerly known as the Ivory Coast. Situated on the Gulf of Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire is one of the world’s largest producers of cocoa and coffee, and has historically been one of West Africa’s most prosperous nations. The country is a cultural crossroads, home to more than 60 ethnic groups whose traditions have blended with French colonial influences to create a distinctive national identity. Its name derives from the colonial-era trade in elephant ivory along its coast.
History
The territory was home to several powerful kingdoms, including the Kong Empire and the Baoulé and Senufo peoples, before European contact. Portuguese navigator Soeiro da Costa reached the coast in 1469, and the region later became a French trading post. France established a protectorate in 1843 and formally organized the colony of Côte d’Ivoire in 1893 . The country achieved independence on August 7, 1960, under Félix Houphouët-Boigny, who ruled until his death in 1993 . Houphouët-Boigny’s rule was marked by economic prosperity and political stability, making Côte d’Ivoire the world’s leading cocoa producer by 1979 . After his death, the country experienced political turmoil, including a 2002 coup attempt that sparked a civil war, dividing the country between north and south . The 2010 elections led to a violent post-election crisis when Laurent Gbagbo refused to concede to Alassane Ouattara, the internationally recognized winner . Ouattara assumed power in May 2011 and has since been re-elected multiple times, most recently in October 2025 .
Culture
Côte d’Ivoire is a cultural mosaic of over 60 ethnic groups, including the Akan (Baoulé, Añí), Mandé (Malinké, Dan, Yakuba), Kru (Bété), and Voltaic (Senufo, Lobi) peoples . The official language is French, with over 70 indigenous languages spoken, including Dioula, Baoulé, and Senufo . Islam is practiced by approximately 40% of the population, Christianity by 35%, and the remainder follow traditional animist beliefs . The country is renowned for its masks and sculptures—particularly Baoulé anthropomorphic figures and Guro and Dan masks used in ritual dances . Zaouli, a traditional Gouro dance inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, is a national treasure . Contemporary music genres like Zouglou and Coupé-Décalé have gained international popularity .
Nature
Côte d’Ivoire covers 322,463 km² and features a relatively flat landscape, with plains and plateaus dominating most of the territory . The highest point is Mount Nimba (1,752 m) in the western mountains near the Liberian border . Four major rivers flow north to south: the Cavally, Sassandra, Bandama, and Comoé . The country has two distinct climate zones: a humid equatorial climate in the south with four seasons (two rainy, two dry), and a tropical semi-arid climate in the north with a single rainy season from June to September . The south was once covered by dense equatorial forest, but deforestation has drastically reduced this to about 6 million hectares of forested area . Protected areas include Taï National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Comoé National Park, which preserve remnants of the original forest and savanna ecosystems .
Government
Côte d’Ivoire is a presidential republic. The President serves as both head of state and head of government, directly elected for a 5-year term .
