Liberia

A country located on the western coast of Africa, known for being the first modern republic on the continent, founded by freed slaves from the United States and the Caribbean. Its unique history has been marked by a political system inspired by the United States, a long domination of the “Americo-Liberian” elite over the indigenous population, and decades of civil wars that devastated the country from the late 20th century. Despite its rich natural resource endowment, Liberia remains one of the poorest countries in the world.
History
The first inhabitants of the territory were indigenous peoples such as the Bassa, Kru, Kpelle, and Vai . In 1821, the American Colonization Society (ACS) established a settlement on the coast to repatriate freed Black slaves from the United States, founding the city of Monrovia in honor of U.S. President James Monroe . In 1847, Liberia became the first independent republic in Africa, with a constitution and flag modeled on those of the United States .
However, independence did not bring freedom for the indigenous peoples. The Americo-Liberians, descendants of the settlers, monopolized political and economic power for more than a century, discriminating against the native population . Stability was broken in 1980, when Sergeant Samuel Doe overthrew and executed President William Tolbert, banning political parties and suspending the constitution . In 1989, Charles Taylor led an insurgency that triggered a brutal civil war (1989-1996), causing some 150,000 deaths and displacing nearly a million people . Taylor was elected president in 1997, but the conflict resumed until his exile in 2003 . After a transition period, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was elected president in 2005, followed by George Weah in 2017 . The current president is Joseph Boakai, who took office in January 2024.
Culture
Liberia is a mosaic of more than a dozen ethnic groups, each with its own language and traditions, although English is the official language and only a portion of the population speaks it . Liberian society is deeply influenced by the heritage of the Americo-Liberian settlers, but also preserves strong indigenous traditions .
Indigenous culture is expressed through secret societies such as the Sande (for women) and the Poro (for men), which play a central role in initiation, education, and social cohesion. Traditional art includes the renowned Dan and Vai masks, used in ritual ceremonies. Oral literature is rich in folklore, and crafts include ivory carving, pottery, and basket weaving. Liberian cuisine is based on rice, palm oil, and cassava, with dishes such as rice and beans and jollof rice.
Nature
Liberia covers 111,369 km² and borders Sierra Leone, Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, and the Atlantic Ocean . The relief consists of low, swampy coastal plains that rise toward plateaus and hills inland, with Mount Wuteve (approx. 1,440 m) as the highest point.
The country is part of the Upper Guinea Forest, one of the most important forest ecosystems in West Africa, and harbors one of the largest extensions of primary forest in the region. More than 2,900 vascular plants, 600 bird species, 150 mammals, and 75 reptiles have been recorded . Notable species include western chimpanzees (about 7,000 in the wild) and the pygmy hippopotamus .
Lake Piso Multiple Use Reserve, designated a Ramsar site in 2003, is the country’s largest coastal lagoon system, with mangroves that serve as fish nurseries and habitat for manatees and crocodiles. However, biodiversity faces serious threats: poaching (150,000 tons of bushmeat per year), commercial logging, mining, and oil palm plantation expansion .
The climate is equatorial humid on the coast, with annual rainfall reaching 4,770 mm, and tropical with a more marked dry season inland.
Government
Liberia is a presidential republic governed by the 1986 Constitution . The President is head of state, head of government, and commander-in-chief of the armed forces. The President is elected by universal suffrage for a 6-year term, renewable only once . The current president is Joseph Boakai, who took office in January 2024.
Legislative power resides in a bicameral Parliament: the Senate has 30 members (2 per county), elected for 9-year terms, and the House of Representatives has 73 members, elected for 6-year terms . The judiciary is independent, with the Supreme Court as the highest body, composed of a Chief Justice and four associate justices, appointed by the President with Senate approval and serving until age 70 . The voting age is 18 .
