Belarus

Belarus is located in Eastern Europe, landlocked by Russia to the east and northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. The terrain is predominantly flat or gently rolling, characterized by vast marshlands, rolling glaciated hills, and extensive forest cover. High elevations are rare, with the country’s highest point, Dzyarzhynskaya Hara, rising to only 1,135 feet (346 meters) above sea level. The northern region features thousands of glacial lakes, while the southern region encompasses the Polesie, one of the largest natural wetland and marsh regions in Europe.
People & Culture
The population is majority ethnic Belarusian, with significant minority groups of Russians, Poles, and Ukrainians. Both Belarusian and Russian hold official language status, with Russian being the primary language spoken in urban centers and daily public life. Eastern Orthodoxy is the dominant religion, alongside a notable Roman Catholic minority, particularly in the western regions near Poland. Belarusian culture reflects a blend of East Slavic traditions, traditional folk arts, and historic European influences. Folk traditions survive in intricate embroidery patterns, woodcarving, and traditional music celebrated during seasonal festivals like Kupala. Traditional cuisine is heavily centered on potatoes, rye flour, pork, and mushrooms, with draniki (crispy potato pancakes served with sour cream) standing as the national dish, along with machanka (a rich meat stew) and cold beet soup.
Nature
Belarus experiences a temperate continental climate with cold, snowy winters and cool, humid summers. Forests cover roughly 40 percent of the nation’s landmass, giving it a reputation as one of Europe’s greenest countries. The nation is home to the Białowieża Forest (Belovezhskaya Pushcha), a UNESCO World Heritage site shared with Poland that preserves one of the last and largest remaining parts of the primeval forest that once covered the European Plain. Wildlife in these protected old-growth forests includes the European bison (zubr)—the national animal and Europe’s heaviest land mammal—alongside brown bears, gray wolves, lynx, Eurasian elk, and wild boars. The country’s extensive network of rivers, including the Dnieper, Neman, and Pripyat, provides vital habitat for migratory waterfowl and aquatic life.
Government
Belarus is officially a presidential republic, though political authority is highly centralized around the presidency. Executive power is exercised by the President, who serves as head of state and holds sweeping legislative, judicial, and political authority. The Prime Minister serves as head of government, managing administrative and economic policy under presidential direction. Legislative authority is vested in the bicameral National Assembly, consisting of the Council of the Republic (the upper house) and the House of Representatives (the lower house).
History
The territory was historically inhabited by East Slavic tribes and later became part of Kievan Rus before being incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 13th century. It subsequently joined the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth following the Union of Lublin in 1569. Through the late 18th-century Partitions of Poland, Belarusian lands were annexed into the Russian Empire. The region suffered severe devastation during World War I and the Polish-Soviet War, after which Eastern Belarus became a founding republic of the Soviet Union in 1922 as the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (BSSR), while Western Belarus was controlled by Poland until 1939. During World War II, Belarus was occupied by Nazi Germany and experienced catastrophic loss of life and destruction, losing roughly a quarter of its population and hundreds of villages. Following the war, the nation reconstructed its industrial base within the USSR and was granted a founding seat in the United Nations in 1945. Belarus officially declared its sovereignty in 1990 and gained full independence in December 1991 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
